Can I split HDMI into audio and video signals?
I need a way to hook up my old sharp HD projector to my new laptop, which uses an HDMI port. The projector has a DVI input that I plan on using. I would also like to use the same HDMI port for digital audio from the laptop to connect to my 5.1 receiver…through either toslink or coaxial cable. (neither the projector nor the receiver have HDMI inputs.) Are there any affordable converter boxes around that could do something like split the HDMI signal into its audio and video components? I’m browsing monoprice.com at the moment, but I’m drawing blanks. Any info would be appreciated.

HDMI means Hi-Definition Multimedia Interface.
it’s a cable and socket style.
you can’t split this socket style into any component pieces, it’s not designed that way.
if you get a ‘converter’, it would be a very expensive piece of kit.
I would look to see if there is some usb device that you can connect to your pc that will give you different video out sockets.
same for audio.
but forget about using the HDMI.
You can get a splitter that splits 1HDMI to 2HDMI and use a HDMI to DVI for the video but you would still need a receiver cable of handling HDMI.
In short HDMI audio is uncompressed and there is no cable that I am aware of that will down mix it to coaxial(digital audio).
By the time you find one and by the required cables and the unit it would cost you the same as buying a new receiver.
When looking for a receiver make sure that it is a switcher not just a pass through. I suggest the Onkyo TXSR606 you can find one for around the 300-400 mark. Well worth the money and it will make you speakers sound great!!!!!!!!!
